Help! How do you make cooler blog pages instead of choosing them from the bank of already made ones?

There are quite a few resources out there. You can check out a site like:

http://blogger-templates.blogspot.com/

Or just do a search for "blogspot templates" to get some websites. Most of them are as east as copying and pasting.
